Founded in 1979, JD Wetherspoon (JDW) operates over 900 pub outlets including the chain of Lloyds No.1 and a growing number of Weatherspoon’s Hotels across the UK and Ireland.

Wetherspoon’s is regarded as one of the UK’s top employers and has been recognised by the Employers Institute as a ‘Top Employer’ for 15 consecutive years. They achieve such accolades, year on year, through their investment in training, policies on equality, competitive remuneration packages and by encouraging all employees to participate actively in their own learning and development.

The Issue
With over 37,000 employees working across the portfolio, there was a high demand on HR staff to communicate quickly and effectively on a range of HR and Payroll subjects. It was essential that all staff had easy access to important information, updates, training and development opportunities, personal data and pay. Seeking a digital solution was paramount to delivering on these objectives.

Our Involvement
JDW sought the guidance and expertise of the Filter Digital team. Working in partnership, Filter Digital were able to help them navigate and understand the most suitable online solution which would allow the HR team to quickly and easily communicate with all employees. The result was the creation of MyJDW.


Filter Digital have an ongoing relationship to continue to develop MyJDW, the platform which allows all employees access to a range of HR and Payroll information. Each employee gains access to MyJDW through a trusted login giving them instant access to important information and the ability to self-serve whenever they need it.
The internal JDW teams are provided with their own custom CMS solution, which allows them to update the site whenever they want to, with full control over all documents and content on the site.

Site Security
With personal information being held on the site, the security of the data had to be a key driver when planning MyJDW. To ensure the strictest standards, penetration tests are scheduled monthly, and a team at JDW assist our own team on systems architecture. The site undergoes a thorough change control process and regular checks to ensure its integrity. The system itself is also tolerant against a failure of any piece of network hardware, with a full DR plan that scales all the way up to the data centre itself.

The success of the platform has led to a number of additional functions being added, such as access for staff to rotas and shift patterns and mechanisms for providing monthly bonus information and updates to training materials.

There is no doubt that the MyJDW platform has reduced the workload of internal HR staff. It has not only freed up internal resources but crucially it has provided all employees easy and secure access to important employment information, support and guidance as and when they need it. The introduction of MyJDW has boosted engagement, encouraged feedback and allowed staff to participate fully as employees, helping the company to retain its position as a top UK employer.
