Amazon Web Services

Introduction to AWS

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is probably the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform, offering over 175 distinct services from multiple data centres globally. Millions of customers—including the fastest-growing startups, largest enterprises, and leading government agencies—are hosting solutions on AWS.

AWS provides infrastructure technologies like compute, storage, and databases and emerging technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, data lakes, and analytics.

We use AWS as a hosting provider for projects that require multiple compute instances to deliver services in a ‘traditional’ server-based architecture. AWS’s mature networking and security services allow us to meet the requirements of clients who are looking for a virtual data centre deployment model while retaining the ability to scale rapidly when required.

Key AWS Features

We typically use a combination of the following AWS services:

  • EC2 – Secure and resizable compute capacity in the cloud
  • S3 – Object storage built to store and retrieve any amount of data
  • RDS – Set up, operate, and scale a relational database
  • ELB – Achieve fault tolerance for any application via load balancing
  • SES – Flexible, affordable, and highly-scalable email sending
  • Cloudwatch – Monitoring of resources and applications

Why do we use AWS?

Amazon has been at the forefront of the cloud computing industry for more than a decade. As a result, the functionality of the platform and the technology behind it are the result of extensive evolution. Hosting a website or application on AWS allows you to benefit from this experience and to take advantage of their significant economies of scale.

One key advantage of AWS is that it is straightforward to map most existing IT systems to a set of discrete AWS components which can then be deployed for a relatively smooth transition of workloads to the cloud. These services can then be integrated with AWS managed services to extend their reach. This is a really helpful approach for clients who want to move away gradually from a server-based architecture towards a more application or service-based model.

Companies such as Hulu, Hilton, Airbnb, Ryanair and McDonalds all host on AWS
