Founder and Joint Managing Partner at Cultural Communications.
Cultural Comms is a market leader in connecting aspirational brands with their audiences using culture as the vehicle. Named as a UK Top 10 Luxury Agency in 2019 and 2020 by PR Week, our campaigns connect our clients to diverse cultural experiences and initiatives, building their profiles, engaging their audiences and meeting their commercial goals.
Established in 2010, we are a multi award-winning communications agency based in London with international partners in the US, Switzerland, South America and Asia. Our clients span multiple sectors including drinks, travel, property, financial services, education and lifestyle.
Can you tell us about your career background and how you got to the position you are in today?
I started off in advertising, moving into PR when the agency opened a new division. My early campaigns included the Sydney 2000 Olympics and David Beckham for Police sunglasses – still the only campaign I’ve worked on where I secured every single UK national newspaper front cover.
What or who inspired you to achieve the success you have had?
I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors. Hilary Crossing, who hired me at Focus PR, has been a huge inspiration, also the founders of everywoman, a business that empowers women to achieve their professional potential and a longstanding client of mine. Julia Record (currently Global Director of Comms at The Dorchester Group) and Pippa Isbell (formerly CEO of PRCo) have also been amazing mentors over the years. The late Gerard Basset taught me that anything is possible if you work hard enough. Outside my industry I look up to business leaders like Chrissie Rucker (The White Company founder) whom I have been privileged to work with.
What’s the best part of your job?
Seeing creative ideas come to fruition and working with an extraordinarily talented team.
What types of projects are you working on right now?
The NatWest everywoman Awards is a major annual event that culminates just before Christmas. It celebrates the UK’s leading female entrepreneurs and the stories that come out of it are humbling, uplifting and inspiring in equal measure. We’ve also just launched Live365, a platform that provides enriching experiences of extraordinary global brands. I’m very excited that we’re hosting an event with Tim Peake as well.
Where do the great ideas come from in your organization?
We work as a team and great ideas come from everyone pitching in.
What are your interests outside of work?
I‘m passionate about food and wine. My parents packed me off to cookery school at the age of 18 and it instilled a lifelong love of good food. I’m lucky enough to have grown up with horses and still ride weekly which is a wonderful escape.
How do you celebrate success?
When I first started out in business I said I’d mark every client win with a little reward. I never have. I’m very bad at celebrating my own success. I’m more interested in celebrating the success of others.
What career advice would you give your younger self?
Be more assertive; don’t take no for an answer; and don’t feel grateful, believe you’ve earned it.
What are little things that annoy you in the workplace?
Unnecessarily long meetings and people who waste my time.
What happens when you get stuck?
I go for a ride or a dog walk. Time away from the desk usually unblocks thought processes.
Are you a hunter or a gatherer?
Can I be both?
What book are you reading right now?
Women in the Kitchen by Anne Willan – it combines two of my favourite subjects: food and feminism.
What podcasts do you regularly tune into?
I like Leading with James Ashton, a collective of interviews with industry leaders from all walks of life.
What are you watching on TV?
I binge watched The Queen’s Gambit – brilliant television. I’m a succour for reruns of The Vicar of Dibley, much to my husband’s horror!
What two items would you have with you if you were stranded on a desert island?
A piano and a wine cellar. I’ll master the first and enjoy the second!
We’re always open to meeting new connections, so if you are an agency owner or senior leader within an agency please do get in touch.
